My brother was in the 8th Transportation Group, Vietnam. I was a helocopter pilot 155th Attack Helicopter Company, before it disbanded. His second tour he joined a gun truck crew, they modified 2.5 or 5 ton cargo trucks to a weapons platform changing out various armament. His favorite was the huge flamethrowers used on Zippo Raids.

The windshield folds down so that in combat a bullet will not shatter the windshield and spray you with glass, or at best obscure your vision at a crucial moment (which there are a lot of when you're under fire). Before you drive into the river, replace that air line that pressurizes the rear axle/differential - a cooling axle (when you're in cool water) will suck water in those little breathers, and your axle lube will be contaminated and diluted with river water. Expensive repair! Fun truck!

@sfertonoc2 года назад +20
I always empty my tanks after a day’s drive to prevent moisture in tanks. Also that blue “brake” button you push is not for parking brakes. It is an emergency air for combat escape when you are low on air and need to override the service brake.
@BusMaster99Год назад
Spring brake,* not service brake, but yeah, the handbrake lever controls both the cable operated parking brake and spring emergency brakes while the green spring brake emergency override is pulled out to the normal position.

I really enjoyed it. My volunteer Fire Dept and a 4x4 brush truck since we had a good amount of fires in the woods and everyone was trained on it except me. My brother Fred purchased a 5 ton but he said everytime he went to the VFW he was filling it up but that was back 26 yrs. He always wanted one but his Wifey made him sell it. I road in it and was confusing to me with all the switches but loved just going for the ride even if it was a mile or so yes he could get some speed out of it. He was in the Army and worked on everything plus he was a helicopter pilot as well as a mechanic on all the birds they had. We loved trucks more than anything else. Keep it coming.

This is a fantastic production Chris. The benefits of compressing the full experience into a longform story are miles above the standard "watch a guy fix something". Those can be great videos but I get much more when you can understand the whole story.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 2 года назад +3
Thanks! I was thinking on trying to keep everything into one video for this truck, but I end up with hours and hours of footage and it gets overwhelming. Keeping it in segments is much more overwhelming. Plus a lot of people probably don't care about the purchase details and operations of this truck. Most people probably just want to see getting her stuck in breaking some stuff! Lol. I appreciate your feedback
@almonjacob3496Год назад +11
My guess is when they bobbed the truck they used the intermediate axle not the rear. You lost the locker when they removed the rear axle. In my experience the military didn't put locker in the intermediate axles because two rear axles with locker would negate the front tires ability to turn the truck on any surface other than dry blacktop.

PAC positive air cut off. It's a spring loaded steel disk for the intake pipe... If your scared look into it. But I have never heard of a diesel engine just running off without some other serious issues like missing piston rings or a turbo seal failure. Neither of which you will get if maintenance has been done regularly and rebuilding at the appropriate intervuls

@tomphillips12042 года назад +6
The fuel shut off is electrical and when it fails it fails to off. The reason you have a hand throttle shut off is that on top of the fuel shut off valve there is a thumb screw that you can turn in to start the engine if the fuel shut off fails. Then use the hand fuel shut off to kill the engine make sure you leave the switches on as you do that.
@johntaylor19472 года назад +6
The now old Detroit two stroke diesel engines had a drop-down flap/valve on top of the blower, it was part of the intake horn. Making something similar for your truck would be a good idea.

I remember about 35yrs ago our Township used to have auctions and at that time there were 4 big military trucks (Dual rear axles) and School buses, no one wanted them and everyone sold for under $10 each, most drove them right out of the auction, some of the school buses sold for a dollar lol. No scrap guys back then around here. Now I see they sell for quite a bit.
@Lured-in2 года назад +12
To stop the run away diesel (usually will consume itself, it burns the engine oil) just spray a CO2 fire extinguisher in the intake and you can quickly take away one of the three elements that is required for fire and stop the run away. That’s a awesome truck, I hope to own one myself some day.

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this yet but for runaway protection the intake flapper is a great option but can be expensive and may not be viable for going underwater if you wanna do that but another option is a co2 fire extinguisher. You just shoot it down the intake or snorkel in your case and hope it dies. Not a sure fire method but knowing the chance of that engine running away is very slim and you need a fire extinguisher anyway I’d rely on it.

you may already know, but the brake button is not a parking brake but a brake over ride. In the event that there was a sudden loss of air pressure, pressing that is supposed to release the spring brakes inorder to get to safety. the hand brake between the seats is the parking brake. Atleast that is the way they were when the Army version came out in 1988 ish when I was in. the button used to be black an would say on it not for parking. and spring brake over ride.

The reason why the green valve doesn't apply the brakes while pulling the parking brake lever is because the green knob is for emergency use only. The handbrake lever controls both the cable operated parking brake and spring emergency brakes. The green knob uses an emergency supply of air to release the spring brakes in the event your air pressure is very low or out completely and you need to move your truck out of a dangerous situation. Many buses have a green emergency override knob as well, but the difference is you have to continuously hold the green button down on buses that have them whereas with this truck, you push in for emergency and pull for normal.

Pretty decent truck under the PIP Program. Cummins engine and Allison transmission were were good. The only bad thing was that the transfer case could not handle the torque in low range reverse. The transfer case would crack. The initial fuel tank venting system was connected to the MT654 transmission vent and sometimes diesel fuel would get into transmission, but that problem was corrected with an field fix.
