Brittany Howard @ BMO Pavilion, 10 p.m.

If you’re looking for a knock-out vocalist, Brittany Howard is the woman for you. The five-time Grammy winner gained fame for her work in the Alabama Shakes as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, but she’s been busy as a solo artist for a good solid decade now.

Howard’s latest album, What Now, is a rich and soulful experience. Her iconic powerful vocals create an almost spiritual atmosphere as she takes her introspections and turns them outward. This show promises to be a journey through multiple genres: soul, rock, R&B and Howard’s special brand of alternative. I’m looking forward to rocking out at this vibrant performance.

Jamila Woods @ Aurora Pavilion, 7:45 p.m.

Would you risk falling in love knowing it will change you? That’s the question Chicago-based artist Jamila Woods asks with her opener "Bugs" from the album Water Made Us. A graduate of Brown University with a BA in Africana Studies and Theater & Performance Studies, Woods creates music that is both purposeful and expansive — one of my favorite examples being her song "Tiny Garden":

I put my flaws on display to scare you away
You put your feelings on hold, winter came and it got cold

Known for her soulful blend of R&B, hip-hop and spoken word, she explores themes of Black identity, love and social justice, drawing inspiration from her experiences. I’m eager to see her perform as the sun begins to set, fully immersing myself in her world of love, self-discovery, heartbreak and the ever-repeating cycle of emotional growth.

Winona Fighter @ Generac Power Stage, 7:45 p.m.

This Nashville band is two-stepping their way to Summerfest to showcase their mash-up of rage and grace, shredding their sounds straight into the ears of anyone who enjoys their punk classic with a twist of pop. Their live performances are an energetically motivating firecracker, with sprinkled messages of positive individuality. They are just so freaking unapologetically themselves, with the goal of creating punk that is accessible and accepting to all music lovers.

This up-and-coming band opened for the likes of The Offspring, Incubus, Motion City Soundtrack and many others. So get your dancing shoes on and open up the pit (be careful of the bleachers), because Winona Fighter is looking to have some fun in Milwaukee.

Trapper Schoepp @ Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard, 8 p.m.

Kick off the Summerfest season with a local music fix from Milwaukee’s own Trapper Schoepp. He’s the youngest musician ever to collaborate with Bob Dylan, whose unreleased song, “On, Wisconsin” was published by Schoepp in 2019. His woodsy, acoustic style draws inspiration from all-stars like Dylan and Johnny Cash while easily settling into modern ears through his depths of storytelling.

On top of his songwriting skills, Schoepp puts on one heck of a show, no matter the size. I saw him at a benefit concert at OPE! Brewing last year, and he absolutely brought the house down. He provides such an eclectic mix of his original songs while throwing in a few covers here and there. That show was before the release of his most recent album (Siren Songs) and newest single (“Meet Me at the End of the World”); so his Summerfest performance tonight is sure to bring even more energy.

All patrons who donate three shelf-stable food items will receive one free admission ticket, valid for the day and time of the promotion only. Food donations will be accepted at all three gates. Limit one ticket per person. All donations benefit Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
